Gout Medications: Two Types
Types of Medications
There are two main types of gout medications: those that relieve pain and inflammation during an attack, and those that lower uric acid levels in the blood.
Medications for Pain and Inflammation
These medications include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen, and corticosteroids such as prednisone. They can be taken orally or injected into the affected joint.
Medications to Lower Uric Acid Levels
These medications include xanthine oxidase inhibitors, such as allopurinol or febuxostat, and uricosurics, such as probenecid or sulfinpyrazone. They are usually taken daily to prevent gout attacks.
